As Porsche go through the alphabet looking for inspiration of how to name their latest version, this is what comes after the S range.
The Porsche Cayman T - in Porsche's words, has been designed for maximum driving pleasure, surely what you'd expect from any Porsche though?
Take the entry level 718 Cayman, remove the entertainment system and replace with with an empty hole, take away metal door handles and replace them with fabric teathers, you'd think Porsche has gone mad but this could be a genius move.
Basically, Porsche has taken away a few bits and bits from the standard Cayman to make it feel more rough and ready. Don't be mistaken though, this is still very much a road car and not a race car. It's got a hint of the GT4, but only a hint.
Starting at a little over £52k it represents pretty good value. As standard you get a manual gearbox, although the car we're testing has the absolutely brilliant PDK automatic gearbox. A 2.0l 4 cylinder turbo charged engine will propel the car to 62mph in under 5 seconds (4.7 seconds with PDK and sports chrono pack) and the sound track from the sports exhaust is a joy.
Whilst we're on the subject of PDK, what a superb addition it is to this car. You could argue all day between Manual or Auto, but when you've got the choice of a transmission as capable as this, it's hard to turn it down. Yes, driving a manual is pure and the driving experience is raw, but unless you're planning on driving on the edge, every time you're behind the wheel or using it as a track toy, go for the PDK option.
So, as well as removing certain bits there actually plenty of kit added - Porsche aren't stupid. Essentially what they've done is gone though their option list, picked out all the best bits and packaged them together to make the T. The lit includes Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Active Drivetrain mounts, Sports Chrono and 20" smoke grey wheels. I've got to say, it looks purposeful sat 20mm lower to the ground.
It drives well too. Feels sharp and agile and wait until you switch to Sport plus, everything tightens up. From a standing start, launch control is often too tempting. The gear ratios are close to perfect and the ceramic brakes rip your neck off. Porsche actually claim that no car can go through it's production line unless it's capable of stopping from 60mph-0mph in half the time it can reach 60mph from a standing start. After trying that out once and not even timing it, I don't doubt them.
So what Porsche have made here, is something between their standard version and the X rated GT4. Price somewhere around £60k (by the time you've been lured in by Porsche option list) it's pretty good value too.
I'd buy one
